One parent’s reflection from class…
There were a couple of incidents last week where one child took a toy from another child. In one case the child who had the toy taken didn’t seem to care much. I can remember exactly, but I think the other case, it did cause some reaction.
The big “ah ha” that I had came from our discussion that ensued. I talked about in the situation where the kid didn’t seem to mind that the toy was taken, it brought up “protector” feelings from me, and based on how I was raise, the instinct to want to be an “arbiter of justice”… and concepts/feelings of “fairness” and “teaching the kid who took the toy a lesson" were all present for me. Of course, I didn’t act on any of these impulses (that’s why I’m at RISE! )…but I certainly noticed them. (hitting send so that this one message isn’t too long)
Shannon talked about the importance of giving the child the agency to choose how they want to react in the situation, and how it’s important to focus on concepts that are age appropriate. Especially at this age, the concept of “fairness” isn’t even a thought for the kids…they are way too present focused. By acknowledging to both the kids that they both want the same toy, that might just be enough. For kids who are persistently taking items, especially when they’re older, it’s probably because they feel the need for power…so we can address that with them (what’s behind that need?). But in this case, there’s really no “injustice,” so to speak…it was just too kids who wanted the same toy. Plus, in Shannon’s words, what does it even mean to “have it first”? For a child, the fact that I played with it last week for 2 minutes might give them the sense of “mine-ness”.
I had my big revelation after this realizing that teaching my daughter to be “strong” by demanding to be treated “fairly” by others is a very limited way of thinking about emotional strength. We live in a world where people will take things/treat us in ways that we’d prefer not to be…that’s just the reality. But while we can strive to make those things better, this whole interaction helped me see that that true emotional strength is teaching her that she’s ok when bad things happens, she’s allowed to feelings about the situations, but she’s still whole and complete at the end of it all. This perspective might even allow her to have compassion for other in that situation.
